Today is the day we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
When it first was sanctioned as a federal holiday not that long ago, I remember how some people complained.
"Why do we need another holiday?" they asked. Or "What did he do that makes him more important than (insert prominent white man's name here)?"
That in itself was a painful reminder of how the racial tension in this country is far from being a thing of the past.

New Year's resolutions are just the stupidest, aren't they? Everyone seems to formulate them from some sort of weird self-hate stance. For example, you say "This year I'm gonna eat healthy and exercise." You say it to yourself with a bit of conviction, then say it aloud to others as if that will solidify your willpower. Two days later you find yourself eating pudding cake in front of a "Fat Actress" marathon and you aren't surprised in the least. Of course you would fail - that's what you intend
