Looks like Apple is about to get caught with its pants down pretty seriously over the uncovering that the iPhone has been silently collecting location data of iPhone users and storing it in an unencrypted SQLite database pretty much for as long as you’ve had your iPhone.
It’s unclear at this point why the data is being collected – most likely in support of a feature that they’re going to introduce but didn’t yet want to let the public in on. I have a feeling, though, that this time the backlash is going to be pretty huge.
To give you a picture of the seriousness of this breach of user trust, the data they’re collecting usually requires a subpoena to obtain. Here’s just a (very) small snippet of the data pulled directly from the database they’ve got on my movements to give you an idea of data scope.
