We here at GossipDuck are sharing our favorite blogs. Serafina Holt kicked off the sharing with her Blogs I Read post and I’ll be posting mine here now.  We’d love to hear from you in the comments.  What blogs do you find yourself reading?

Huffington Post is my go to web addresses for just about everything that is happening news-wise.  For me it’s replaced the major news networks simply because they draw from so many sources.  There just aren’t many things that happen that isn’t reported here.

I discovered Mashable.com in 2008 and fell in love.  Being someone who works with web development and communications I really appreciate how it’s focus on technology and social media is always ahead of the curve.  They know what is going on and what WILL be going on.  It’s wonderful if you are trying to gauge where to focus your efforts.  Everyone in an IT field should be reading this blog and anyone interested in where the web is headed will find it worthwhile as well.

The Crticial Condition was a blog I came upon by accident one day.  I use Google Reader to keep track of all of my RSS feeds (and so should you, by the way) and I think it was a recommended feed or something.  Anyway, I adore how Mark Blankenship writes.  I am especially envious of how well he writes critiques.  Movies are probably my favorite pastime and writing about them has always been a dream.  I’m not very good at it, but Mark is.  My favorite recent post of his is his assessment of Inglourious Basterds.

ReadWriteWeb is another IT/Web tech blog.  Great content and discussions about developments in technology and the web.

I only recently started reading Penelope Trunk’s Brazen Careerist, but was quickly hooked.  There is just somehting fascinating about how she has opened up her soul to everyone here.  She also has some pretty good advice.  I also don’t personally know that much about Asperger Syndrome, but it is very interesting to read about how she copes with it.

Another blog I really enjoy is Babble.com.  It’s kind of a parenting magazine for Gen Xers.  I love their take on child rearing and I usually feel like it is much more in tune with reality than the majority of parenting media.  There isn’t a lot of “this is the right way to do it”-type content.  Just stories from people in exactly the same predicament as you.

And lastly, another of my favorites is Smashing Magazine. It is probably one of the best places for designers to visit for lists of resources, inspiration, trends, technology, etc.  Very useful if you are in any kind of design field.

Here are some blogs I check in on and really like, but don’t follow as closely as I’d like:

  • Gawker – I love this blog, but can’t keep up with the fire hose of content, so don’t frequent it as much as I’d like.  I love the way they write though.
  • CSS-Tricks – Wonderful resources for web developers and designers.
  • Coal Tattoo – Ken Ward from the Charleston Gazette’s blog on WV mining issues – especially mountaintop removal mining (MTR). The best coverage on this topic.
  • The Rural Blog focuses purely on rural issues and do a great job with it.  This is quite an accomplishment given that so much of rural news media is not accessible via the web.
  • Cool Tools – Totally random, but really neat stuff featured here.

I check in with a lot of other blogs, but many of them have specific areas of interest (WordPress development or blogging).  If anyone is interested in that I’ll do another post on that at a later date.

Have fun and happy reading!
