Open Thread: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Today is the day we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
When it first was sanctioned as a federal holiday not that long ago, I remember how some people complained.
“Why do we need another holiday?” they asked. Or “What did he do that makes him more important than (insert prominent white man’s name here)?”
That in itself was a painful reminder of how the racial tension in this country is far from being a thing of the past.
We have come a long way and we still have a long way to go. Perhaps the only thing that is going to ease these tensions is for the people who feel that way to age out of the discussion. I don’t know.
Regardless, Dr. King’s vision, work, commitment, and sacrifice inspired millions of people around the world.
Even though it’s been 40-odd years since the “I Have a Dream” speech it still gives me hope and inspiration to hear it. The words have a universal truth to them that I hope will continue to inspire generations for decades to come.
How has Dr. King inspired you?
